The Sidoarjo Food and Agriculture Service (Dispaperta) found that 3 cows belonging to a sacrificial animal trader were indicated to have been exposed to the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus with mild symptoms.

This was revealed by the Head of the Sidoarjo Dispaperta Livestock Production Division, Dr. Tony Hartono, when inspecting sacrificial animals belonging to 31 traders in 18 sub-districts. Tony and other officers found 3 cows that were indicated to have been infected with the FMD virus belonging to a trader on Jalan Raya Lingkar Timur, Buduran, Sidoarjo.

The cattle experienced a number of symptoms such as decreased appetite, several sores on the mouth and nose and excessive salivation. "There were several who were found to have FMD symptoms, but the symptoms were mild, the cows still wanted to eat and had wounds in their mouths," said Tony to the media after examining a number of animals, Tuesday [11 Jun 2024]. Then, Tony immediately asked the owner of the 3 cows to immediately separate them into another pen. This is to prevent transmission to nearby animals.

Dispaperta Sidoarjo has provided a number of medicines to cure cows infected with FMD. Apart from that, traders are asked not to sell sick animals in advance.

"Our team is providing assistance in the form of medicine, especially vitamins. It is hoped that on the D day (Eid al-Adha) they (3 cows infected with FMD) can recover," he explained.

Tony added that people can still use cows with mild disease symptoms to sacrifice. However, he asked that it be better to choose animals that are truly healthy. "In accordance with the MUI (Indonesian Ulema [Scholars] Council) fatwa [religious ruling and interpretation], for mild symptoms of FMD or LSD (lumpy skin disease), it is still permissible to become sacrificial livestock," he said.

["The Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and with support from the Australian Government, has accelerated the vaccination program against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in 8 districts across 5 provinces, such as Indragiri Hulu District (Riau), Sukabumi District (West Java), Barru District (South Sulawesi), Central Lombok and East Lombok Districts (West Nusa Tenggara), and Pati, Rembang, and Wonogiri Districts (Central Java). A total of 58 448 livestock including cattle, dairy cows, goats and sheep have been successfully vaccinated through this vaccination program which ran from February 2024 to March 2024."

"In May 2022, Indonesia reported its first re-emergence of an FMD outbreak affecting the livestock population since it was declared FMD-free in 1990. The National Disaster Management Agency, Indonesia declared a national emergency from 29 Jun 2022 until 31 Dec 2022 due to the high spread of FMD in almost all provinces in Indonesia. The outbreak caused significant losses to both the livestock population and the livelihood of rural communities" (https://www.fao.org/indonesia/news/detail-events/en/c/1679474/).

According to the "FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific" news (dated 3 May 2023), "more than 600 000 animals in Indonesia have been infected by FMD and more than 11 000 have died, while farmers have been forced to slaughter a further 15 000. Indonesia had been free of FMD for more than 30 years, but in September 2022, the government reported that an FMD outbreak had been detected in 24 out of 34 provinces. Since then, a further 3 provinces have been affected" (https://www.fao.org/asiapacific/news/detail-events/en/c/1638419/).

"Sidoarjo Regency is a regency in East Java, Indonesia. It is bordered by Surabaya City and Gresik Regency to the north, by Pasuruan Regency to the south, by Mojokerto Regency to the west, and by the Madura Strait to the east" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidoarjo_Regency). - Mod.TTM
