Indonesia has launched a vaccination program to contain an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that has spread to 11 provinces and infected thousands of livestock, an official said on Tuesday [14 Jan 2025].
Data from the national animal health information system showed 338 livestock were killed and 14 630 others have been infected by the disease since the 1st case was recorded in December [2024].
"Our strategy is through livestock vaccination of healthy animals to provide immunity against the disease," the agriculture ministry's director of animal health, Imron Suandy, told Reuters.

["The Indonesian government has distributed 124 225 doses of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in the 1st phase of the distribution to stem the spread of the disease among livestock. Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Agung Suganda said that for this year [2025], the Ministry of Agriculture has prepared 4 million doses, which will be distributed in stages to 25 provinces with FMD cases.
