On Monday [3 Mar 2024], a well-informed source revealed statistics on the damage caused by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Diyala Province, while the veterinary hospital confirmed that the outbreak is subsiding.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that "over the past few weeks, approximately 1700 livestock -- mainly buffalo -- were infected with FMD, with dozens dying while others recovered after appropriate measures were taken."

The source added that "cases were detected in various areas, including Khan Bani Saad, Al-Abarah, Al-Muqdadiyah, Al-Ghalibiyah, Mandali, and Qazaniyah." He also noted that "other livestock diseases have been recorded in Iraq, but the situation remains under control."

For his part, Dr. Muhammad Ghadhban, the Director of the Veterinary Hospital in Diyala, confirmed that "the province has passed the danger phase concerning FMD, as infections and fatalities have significantly declined."

Ghadhban explained to the agency that "the epidemiological report recorded around 50 suspected cases of buffalo, sheep, and cattle yesterday [2 Mar 2025], including potential FMD infections, but no deaths were reported." He emphasized that "the decline in infection rates indicates that the disease is receding in Diyala, and the province has overcome the critical phase."

He further clarified that "FMD is an old and well-known disease in Iraq that poses no risk to humans and has a low mortality rate. Therefore, the situation in the province is under control, and there are no threats."

[FMD is endemic in Iraq. Similar reports regarding the spread of the disease in other governorates have been reported by ProMED (see posts below). In 2024, FMDV outbreaks were due to the emerging SAT2/XIV lineage across several governorates. A vaccination campaign started in August 2024 using a vaccine containing O, A, Asia-1, and SAT 2 serotypes. Information regarding the FMDV serotype(s)/topotype(s) currently circulating in Iraq is expected. - Mod.SF
