[The FMD event caused by the strain above reportedly started in north east Israel on 2 Apr 2018, affecting free ranging beef cattle in Kibbutz Gazit, as reported in an OIE immediate notification dated 9 Apr 2018; the genotyped samples were collected from this 1st outbreak. On 29 Apr 2018, 4 additional outbreaks were reported by Israel's Veterinary Services & Animal Health (VSAH) to the OIE in follow-up report no 1, providing epidemiological details from a large dairy farm, 3 free-ranging beef cattle herds, and a cluster of wild mountain gazelles (_Gazella gazella_, a protected species), all distributed within a region located south of Lake Kinneret ("the Sea of Tiberias"), adjacent to the Jordan river separating Israel from the Kingdom of Jordan. For links to the 2 available official OIE reports and a map indicating the 5 affected locations, see http://www.oie.int/wahis_2/public/wahid.php/Reviewreport/Review/viewsummary?fupser=&dothis=&reportid=26394.
On 26 May 2018, the VSAH reported, on the Ministry's website, the laboratory confirmation of a new outbreak affecting fattening cattle in Kfar Kish (map at https://tinyurl.com/y9rh773d). The report (in Hebrew) is available at http://www.moag.gov.il/vet/Yechidot/Apidmiology/mahalot_baaley_haim/mahalot_minim_shonim/pe_tlafaim/pirsumim/Documents/pe_vetlapaim_kefar-kish.pdf.
The current event is caused by a strain (sublineage QOM) which has not been found earlier in Israel; it is thus a new introduction, the route(s) of which deserving investigation. Previous FMD events in Israel, caused by FMDV O PanAsia-2, involved sublineages ANT-10 (in 2012), and FAR-09 (in 2013/14). - Mod.AS
