Affected population description:
The affected population is the cattle farms in Dhlail area in Zarqa Governorate with severe clinical signs shown on dairy cattle: fever, lesions on mouth, hooves and udder with a significant reduction in milk yield and deaths of calves.

Epidemiology:
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: Unknown or inconclusive
Epidemiological comments: All cattle in the outbreak zone were vaccinated with a booster dose of an FMD vaccine containing inactivated SAT-2 Eritrea serotype. Since last follow-up report no new cases were detected in the infected zone or outside the infected zone (the buffer zone). Surveillance in the buffer zone and surveillance zone revealed no positive animals using the NSP ELISA.

[According to Jordan's final report, the FMD serotype SAT-2 event, which started in January 2023, has been resolved, after severely affecting the cluster of dairy cattle in Dhlail. Remaining restricted to a single district is remarkable. Such scenario could have been achieved by the timely application of animal movement restrictions, closure of animal markets, and ring vaccination around the focus, with a matching vaccine. Another scenario, namely subclinical infections by FMD SAT-2 virus in resistant livestock elsewhere in Jordan, deserves to be examined by a serosurvey in indigenous, possibly resistant cattle, sheep, and goats.

Currently, FMDV SAT-2 is continuing its circulation in the region, reportedly in Turkey and Iraq. It will be interesting to compare, in these 2 countries, FMDV strains SAT-2 and (endemic) O strains in regard to their respective pathogenicity, particularly in juvenile ruminants.

Genotyping results of the causative agents in the 3 affected countries are anticipated. - Mod.AS
