[For the 10 "most closely-related prototype sequences" and phylogenetic tree (dendrogram) please refer to the full report at the source URL above. The closest related prototype is the FMDV strain from cattle in Bhutan, 'BHU/3/2009'. All other 9 prototype sequences have lower identity levels.
The VP1 sequencing of the FMD virus sampled on 23 Feb 2017 from a sheep in Jiza (map at https://tinyurl.com/y7j8x99f) was performed by the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Irbid, where its genotype was determined as O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d (see 20170518.5045184). The results of the further analysis at Pirbright, in particular its phylogenetics, have been published on 15 May 2018. Additional Jordanian outbreaks were reported from goats at Deir Alla, Al Balqa (2 Mar 2017), cattle at Hwarah, Irbid (9 Mar 2017) and cattle at Kraymah, Jordan Valley, Al Balqa (14 Mar 2017). See the event's summary, including a map, at https://tinyurl.com/ydbrb8wt. Notably, 2 of the 4 outbreaks were located in the al Balka region, on the eastern bank of the Jordan river, adjacent to Israel's territory. The event was declared as resolved on 9 Apr 2017.
Since early April 2018, a new FMD serotype O event has been spreading in north east Israel, on the western bank of the Jordan River which separates Israel from Al Balka in the Kingdom of Jordan. Grazing beef cattle, housed dairy cattle, wild gazelles, and captive deer have, so far, been reportedly affected. A map showing the locations of the 5 reported outbreaks is available at https://tinyurl.com/ybzprpur.
According to WRLFMD's Israel page, 4 samples from the mentioned current event have been received there on 24 Apr 2018 (batch WRLFMD/2018/00015); the genotyping results are pending. - Mod.AS
