Affected population: the animals are herded by herders from different villages to the nearest mountains during this rainy season since the fields from which crop residues are used have been prepared with crops.
Epidemiology
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: illegal movement of animals; contact with infected animal(s) at grazing/watering points; unknown or inconclusive
Epidemiological comments: the cattle population in this area graze in communal grazing land and animals meet from different villages and locations. There is also uncontrolled livestock movement within the locality and near the border villages.
Domestic control measures applied: surveillance within containment and/or the protection zone; surveillance outside containment and/or the protection zone; movement control inside the country; screening
Domestic control measures to be applied: vaccination in response to the outbreak(s), quarantine, disinfestation

An outbreak of FMD type SAT1 was previously reported in cattle at Msiyamphanje, Lengwe National Park, Chikwawa, Southern Region on 1 Apr 2021. According to the epidemiological comments, the event was resolved on 5 Aug 2021, as no clinical signs were reported.
