Affected population: Epithelial tissues sent to ANSES laboratory and presence of FMD type O virus confirmed. Dairy and mixed-breed cattle; 52 000 estimated total susceptible population of Rodrigues (8700 cattle, 13 500 goats, 12 000 sheep, and 14 300 pigs).

Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: unknown or inconclusive
Epidemiological comments: Clinical suspicion of foot-and-mouth disease, which was later confirmed by ANSES laboratory on 25 Mar 2021 to be of type O FMD strain.

Measures applied in domestic: quarantine; official disposal of carcasses, by-products, and waste, movement control inside the country; disinfection; ante- and post-mortem inspections

A press release was published on 10 Mar 2021 communicating the foot-and-mouth disease [FMD] outbreak in Rodrigues (in French; see https://tinyurl.com/yhc865ps).

In 2016, the Government of Mauritius created a fact-finding committee to investigate the outbreak of FMD in the Republic of Mauritius in 2016. According to this report, the FMD outbreaks in Rodrigues and Mauritius that occurred in 2016 were due to FMD virus serotype O, topo-type SA-ME, lineage Ind-2001d. - Mod.CRD
