Affected population: Due to the information of cows manifesting clinical signs associated with foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Kayonza District in 2 farms, blood and oral tissue samples were collected for further analysis. The 1st farm was located in Kahi cell, Gahini sector, and the 2nd farm was located in Kanyinya, Ndego sector in the district of Kayonza.

In the 1st farm: Out of 102 cows, 53 had FMD symptoms. Nine blood samples were collected from the coccygeal vein. All the 9 cows from the 1st farm showed the presence of antibodies against FMD virus.

In the 2nd farm: Out of 397 cows, 4 had clinical symptoms. Blood samples from 11 cows were collected. Serological analysis showed that 2 out of 11 cows had produced antibodies against FMD virus.

Epidemiological comments: Kayonza district is one of the areas in Eastern Province of Rwanda, where the country is still facing FMD outbreaks due to illegal cattle movement across the borders.

Control measures
Measures applied: Movement control inside the country, vaccination in response to the outbreak(s), surveillance within containment and/or protection zone, screening, traceability, quarantine, disinfection, slaughter, ante- and post-mortem inspections, no treatment of affected animals
