[According to Turkiye's immediate notification and FUR 1, 3 provinces have been affected since the start of the FMDV SAT-2 event, on 3 Mar 2023. These provinces, located in the east, border each other and neighboring countries, as follows: the provinces of Ağrı, bordering Iran to the east; Iğdır, bordering on its east Armenia, Azerbaijan (the area of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic) and Iran; and Kars, bordering Armenia. In each province, one village was reported affected. Out of a total of 4944 susceptible cattle in the 3 provinces combined, 7 clinical cases are reported; no deaths. For an exotic FMD serotype, against which the domestic ruminant population is fully susceptible, this is a rather benign presentation of the event than expected, based on previous experience. - Mod.AS]

Turkiye isolates 215 villages due to foot-and-mouth disease outbreak
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Turkish authorities have announced the isolation of villages in the northern region of Zonguldak, due to the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease virus among animals.

Teams from the provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry have begun vaccination studies in areas where the disease was found, according to local media reports.

The incubation period of the virus in the body of animals is up to 15 days. The disease leads to lowered milk production, eating disorder and high temperatures.

Foot-and-mouth disease is transmitted from one animal to another by various means, including feed.

The foot-and-mouth disease virus is not transmitted to humans through meat.

[Zonguldak Province, situated along the western Black Sea coast region of Turkiye (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zonguldak_Province), is divided into 8 districts: Alaplı, Çaycuma, Devrek, Gökçebey, Ereğli, Kilimli, Kozlu and Zonguldak (capital district). According to the above media reports, 5 of the districts have been declared FMD-infected with the consequent measures applied. As a precautionary measure, a similar policy is being applied in a 6th district of the province, namely Dverek, which borders 3 neighboring provinces: Düzce to the southwest, Bolu to the south, and Karabük to the southeast.

On 9 Mar 2023, the President of Turkiye's Chamber of Agriculture, İslam Yıldırım, was cited by Safak Gazete, stating, "Currently, foot and mouth disease is seen in animals in most parts of our country"; see also post number 20230310.8708855. Zonguldak Province is nearly 1000 km (620 mi) distant, as the crow flies, westwards from the 3 eastern provinces which have been, so far, officially reported as infected. Turkiye's interactive administrative map is available at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Turkey.

Confirmation or otherwise on the FMD situation in Zonguldak will be welcomed. - Mod.AS
