[A total of] 152 cattle and 52 sheep and goats have died after contracting the foot-and-mouth disease in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou. The deceased animals were recorded in 23 farms located across 11 municipalities, according to sources close to the veterinary services of the Directorate of Agricultural Services of the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou.
These services, which have opted to keep livestock markets in the wilaya closed, indicate that the losses could have been even more severe without the ongoing vaccination efforts. In addition to vaccination, the same services are intensifying awareness campaigns with the participation of many farmers.
As a reminder, foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that affects livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and camels.
