The presence of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in a dairy cattle herd in the Level settlement of Gyor-Moson-Sopron county was confirmed by the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nebih). In order to reduce the virus shedding, the experts of the county government office immediately started vaccinating the farm, which has 3000 animals, and the liquidation of the farm will begin within days. Several restrictive measures have also come into effect in the districts of Gyor and Mosonmagyarovar. The early slaughter of susceptible animals in the backyard plays a particularly important role in preventing the spread of the disease.
The first physical symptoms appeared on March 25 [2025] in the 3000-head cattle herd in the settlement of Level. The presence of FMD was confirmed by laboratory tests at the National Veterinary Institute on the morning of March 26 [2025], so Dr. Szabolcs Pasztor, the national chief veterinarian, decided on several immediate measures.
FMD spreads extremely easily, even over long distances by wind. The animal health experts of the Gyor-Moson-Sopron County Government Office started vaccinating the herd on Wednesday morning [26 Mar 2025] in order to minimize virus shedding until the farm is liquidated. The slaughter of the animals will also begin within days. The epidemiological investigation, especially the detection and examination of contact farms, is in progress.
The national chief veterinarian has extended the possibility of home slaughter to all susceptible species in the districts of Gyor and Mosonmagyarovar. The local authority must be informed in advance of the slaughter date in order to take samples.
Thanks to the nationwide investigation that lasted several weeks, the infection of the farm was discovered extremely early, in the initial stage of the disease, which is an especially favorable circumstance from the point of view of epidemic control. In the coming days, livestock keepers can help prevent and eradicate the spread of the FMD epidemic by slaughtering at home and by implementing the measures quickly and in a disciplined manner.

[Additional farms infected by FMDV in the quarantine zone on the shared border of both countries was not unexpected. With testing occurring fairly rapidly, it's hoped that spread can be minimized. - Mod.JH
