The Garut Regency Government [West Java] conducted a ring vaccination campaign for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) after 233 livestock were found sick, 14 died and 9 were forcibly slaughtered. The government has provided 1150 doses of vaccine for business actors and livestock in the Garut Regency area.

Acting Regent [Governor] of Garut, Barnas Adjidin said, the spread of FMD that occurred in his area was indeed reported by the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Service to the temporary number of 233 sick, 14 dead and 9 forcibly slaughtered. However, the spread has launched a vaccination ring movement to prevent the spread of FMD which has the potential to harm the livestock sector in the Garut Regency area.

"The spread of FMD is a serious threat to the quality of cattle and sheep and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures so that the spread of this disease does not spread. We thank PT Citra Agro Buana Semesta for helping the government in 26 providing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds in the form of vaccinations for livestock located around the company and the vaccinations carried out can be controlled," he said Friday [24 Jan 2025].

He said, facing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha [religious feast days] will not become a widespread problem after the livestock were vaccinated and the distribution of livestock would certainly be felt if there was a disease in the distribution that would harm the farmers. However, the vaccination movement ring program also received support through CSR assistance in the form of livestock vaccination and after all had been done, a health certificate in the form of a vaccine certificate would be obtained.

"We thank PT CABS for providing 158 doses of FMD and LSD vaccines for cattle, and 200 doses of vaccines for sheep. Because the vaccination is intended for healthy livestock such as cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep and the implementation involves officers from the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Service, animal health, UPT, livestock business units such as feedlots, dairy cooperatives," he said.

Meanwhile, Director of PT CABS, Yudi Guntara Noor said, the spread of FMD including lumpy skin disease (LSD) has required active collaboration with the West Java Provincial Government and Garut Regency to combat it. The FMD case that broke out in 2022 also required efforts to control cases in Malangbong District.

"We hope that this vaccination can be a long-term preventive effort ahead of Eid al-Adha so that there are no restrictions on livestock traffic. We are also working with the government to do the same thing so that thank God at that time we could resolve it so that it did not spread until the number of Malangbong cases could be reduced," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Livestock Breeding and Production of the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, Sintong HMT Hutasoit revealed that the central government in handling FMD has prepared 4 million doses of vaccine to be distributed to various regions as needed. However, vaccination will be carried out in February or March [2025] so that FMD cases in Indonesia can be resolved.

"Garut Regency will certainly calculate how much is needed with the occurrence of cases to prevent FMD cases. Because our vaccination program is now not aimed at today [26 Jan 2025] or tomorrow [27 Jan 2025], but also to anticipate later during Eid al-Adha there will be no traffic restrictions," he concluded.
