Sami Houidi, the president of the local union for agriculture and fisheries in Bouargoub, stated that the agricultural district in the region has recorded an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among cattle and sheep herds, resulting in the death of 6 cattle over the last 10 days of January [2025].
According to Houidi, foot-and-mouth disease is a contagious viral disease that causes fever, mouth ulcers, excessive salivation, and high fever in animals. It also leads to reduced milk production and miscarriages in cows. He pointed out that Bouargoub lacks a veterinarian despite having a significant livestock population in the area.
The president of the local union for agriculture and fisheries in Bouargoub criticized what he described as the "negligence of the livestock production department" in containing the outbreak and providing the necessary vaccinations for the herd. He noted that farmers were being directed to private veterinarians and were burdened with the costs of treatment and the loss of infected animals.
In an appeal to the relevant authorities, he called for urgent intervention to control the disease, the appointment of a veterinarian for Bouargoub, and the provision of necessary vaccine doses to protect the remaining livestock.

Three livestock breeders in the Bou Argoub district of Nabeul Governorate informed the local union of agriculture and marine fishing in Bou Argoub of the death of 6 heads of cattle in their herd due to foot-and-mouth disease infection, according to what the head of the local union, Sami Al-Huwaidi, revealed today, Friday [7 Feb 2025], in a statement to the Tunis Africa News Agency "TAP".
Al-Huwaidi considered that the registration of these cases confirms the need to make additional efforts and provide the Bou Argoub region, which has about 1200 livestock breeders, with a veterinarian to vaccinate their herd against various diseases that have begun to spread in the region.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a contagious viral disease that causes fever, mouth ulcers, drooling, and high temperatures in animals. It also causes a decrease in milk production and aborting of the fetus in cows.
On the other hand, the same source noted that the herd vaccination operations against lumpy skin disease (a viral disease that affects cows and is not transmitted to humans) have advanced by 60% thanks to the efforts of veterinarians from the Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development in Nabeul. In this context, he called on private sector veterinarians to implement their promises and commitments announced by the Deanship of Veterinarians to contribute to this preventive effort and strengthen the interventions of public sector veterinarians, noting that "the veterinarian who pledged to intervene in Bou Argoub has not yet carried out any intervention or presented any program to vaccinate the herd."

[In recent years, North Africa has experienced several notable developments concerning foot-and-mouth disease. FMDV outbreaks have been officially reported in Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya, with clinical signs observed in cattle, sheep, and goats in 2024. The circulating serotypes belong to the East Africa 3 (EA-3) topotype and the SAT 2-V topotype (in Algeria). Since the beginning of 2025, both Algeria and Libya have officially reported FMDV outbreaks due to the serotype O (refer to the See Also posts below). Information about the FMDV serotype(s) and topotype(s) currently circulating in Tunisia is anticipated.
The last follow-up report available regarding the FMDV situation in Tunisia dates from February 14, 2024: https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-event/5379/dashboard. - Mod.SF
