The veterinary inspection services of the wilaya of Jijel have recorded suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in recent days in certain municipalities of the wilaya, stated the veterinary inspector, Dr. Dahmane Mohamed, in a statement to the local press.
A total of 64 suspected cases have been identified, including 14 confirmed cases, primarily among sheep in the municipalities of Oudjana, Kaous, Kheiri Oued Adjoul, Ouled Yahia Khedrouche, and Sidi Abdelaziz.
The veterinary inspector indicated that, in response, his services have launched a vaccination campaign for livestock to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. He revealed that these services have already vaccinated no fewer than 7424 cattle across all affected outbreak areas. The epidemic has resulted in the death of 7 cattle.
The official urged farmers to avoid moving their livestock to other farms and stables to prevent a potential spread of this epidemic, which has already caused damage. The vaccination campaign is still ongoing in 5 municipalities to combat foot-and-mouth disease and prevent further losses for livestock farmers.

The image above is a press release issued in February 2025, offering clarifications from the Directorate of Agricultural Services of the wilaya of Béjaïa regarding the region's epidemiological situation. It addresses circulating information about 32 outbreak sites and the death of 200 cows, confirming that these cases are related to lumpy skin disease, not foot-and-mouth disease. Only one outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease was recorded in the wilaya on 7 Jan 2025. The relevant services have taken the necessary measures to control the outbreak and initiate a ring vaccination campaign.
